Whatever your ability, Alta is for you! Alta Ski Area provides the skiing; private businesses provide the rest, including lodging, dining, helicopter & backcountry tours, massages and church services. Deep powder snow, rugged terrain and spectacular scenery are world renown charateristics of Alta. Its best kept secret is the great beginner and intermediate terrain. The wide variety of awesome terrain and snow conditions provide skiing opportunities for every level of skier.

Some suggest that Alta is a mountain with a soul. Others who are involved in the industry lament that "Alta is the best of what they were." It may be that the combination of a rich history and a dedication to the pureness of the skiing experience verify the claims. Alta is a skiers' mountain. Snowboarding is not allowed.

Alta Ski Area is committed to preserving and protecting the above mentioned skiing experience. A "skiing emphasis" attempts to match the number of skiers with available facilities and terrain. Alta considers lift lines, weather and slope conditions, as well as the availability of parking, dining, restrooms and other guest services, when it evaluates the experience it offers its guests.

There may be times, especially during holiday periods, when Alta will limit the number of skiers in the area. When those infrequent occasions arise, the timing is usually mid-morning through early afternoon.

You're getting away to the mountains. You've already pictured it in your mind. But you haven't decided which mountains. They have to be grand, awe-inspiring, wide-open and glistening under a big blue sky.

Sounds like Big Sky, Montana. We're one of the last places in the Rocky Mountain West that remains uncrowded and surrounded by vast regions of unspoiled wild lands. Can you picture it? We can.

Located just 48 miles from Yellowstone National Park in the heart of the Gallatin National Forest, Big Sky is home to the greatest scenery, the most abundant wildlife, and some of the most exciting recreation in southwest Montana.

In addition to being the home to two downhill ski areas and the top Nordic ski center in North America, winter in Big Sky brings opportunity for sleigh ride dinners, dogsled adventures, and local seasonal festivals.

So maybe there's more to Big Sky than just its unforgettable setting near Yellowstone Park. Like 400 inches of annual snowfall, 85 miles of named runs and lots of elbow room. Lift lines are basically non-existent here. The skiing and riding is the ultimate experience.

But after the lifts close, you may want to try some other snow-specific activities. If your legs aren't too tired, slow down the pace by exploring the backcountry on snowshoes or nordic skis. Memorable evenings are made at local guest ranches' sleigh rides. You can even take a horseback ride or go flyfishing in the winter. But maybe a soak in the hot tub or a relaxing massage at Solace Spa is what you need. You choose. After all, this is a place all your own.
